The Fantastical Other is a two-part series exploring TJ Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea and its sequel, Somewhere Beyond the Sea. Each module stands on its own as a close, discussion-based reading, but together they trace Klune’s evolving exploration of belonging, otherness, family, and the struggle to build a life of dignity in the face of institutional suspicion. Through the two novels, we’ll consider how fantasy, humour, domestic life, and acts of resistance become ways of asking who gets to belong—and what it takes to protect that belonging once it has been found.
