East Asia has a long and rich tradition of story-telling involving the Fantastic. Gods, immortals, ghosts, long (dragons), demons, yaogui/youkai, pillow worlds, shamans, wizards, diviners, exorcists, avenging spirits----these and more enliven, shape, and expand religious, artistic, and narrative possibilities. In this capsule we will focus specifically upon the topic of cultural conceptions of ghosts in East Asia: how they are "produced," how they may be dealt with, and why they occupy such a central place in the East Asian Fantastic.
