Welcome to SPACE, our adult continuing education program which offers interactive monthly courses for personal enrichment! Learn more here.

Amongst the little snippets of detail that we have about life on the island of Númenor we find a fascinating reference to Númenórean bears and their custom of gathering yearly each fall to perform slow but dignified dances. There are other places in Tolkien's legendarium where we find references to bears, for example in 'The Hobbit' and 'The Father Christmas Letters', and in every case these bears are depicted as acting in ways very different to what we might expect of such wild creatures. Join Dr. Sara Brown for a short but fun discussion of Tolkien's dancing bears!
