Join Dr. Corey Olsen for a close look at young Tolkien’s mock-epic poem, "The Battle of the Eastern Field." Tolkien’s first ever published poem features many of the things that will be characteristic of Tolkien’s poetry. Rhyme variations, metrical play, archaisms of style and matter, satire, foolery, and a metatextual frame—all are clearly visible in this schoolboy poem by the late teenage Tolkien.
