Showcase lecture for
Daughters of the North:
Women in Old Norse Society
in the SPACE Showcase: May 3, 2025.
Have you ever wondered about the real life Lagertha? If Viking women truly went beyond their traditional gender roles? Join me for this brief introduction into the endless yet too-long neglected presence of women in Old Norse society.
This capsule serves as an overview of the diverse roles and identities of women in Viking society that will be covered in the SPACE module. Some women got involved in politics through their husbands or male relatives, while others made their own independent decisions. Others ran farms and textile workshops, and as production increased, resourceful housewives expanded their work beyond the family's needs. Women may have carried out religious functions especially related to magic and divination, and some even succeeded in male professions, not only as potential warriors but also as poets.
