Archaeologist and philologist
Galen Miller-Atkins is an archaeologist, philologist, and writer in Washington State, working in cultural resource management while researching and translating Old Norse texts.
He has worked on archaeological projects across Washington State, Oregon, South Africa, and the country of Georgia. His archaeological background is primarily in lithic technology, landscape archaeology, and quantitative methods. As a cultural resource management professional, he conducts archaeological projects for multiple non-profits, state, federal, and Tribal agencies, providing recommendations on how best to manage and protect cultural resources.
As a philologist, he works on late medieval Old Icelandic and Old Norse texts such as rímur, rhyming metrical romances, runic inscriptions, and poetic metrical analysis. He has recently published a paper on Tolkien’s Old English Attila poem and its Old Norse source, the Atlakviða. His Graduate Diploma in Germanic Philology consisted of a translation of the late medieval Icelandic Völsungsrímur, a metrical retelling of the Saga of the Volsungs, and his M.A. thesis investigated the metrical quality of three Early Runic inscriptions. He is currently working on several research projects including rímur and saga translations.
Galen has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Ohio University, a Masters of Arts in Anthropology from Washington State University, a Graduate Diploma in Germanic Philology from Signum University, and is completing his Masters of Arts from Signum University. Galen is a Principal Investigator with Substrate Collaborative Anthropological Research and lives in Washington State with his family and two cats.
