Lauren Allen
Enthusiastic Grammarian
Lauren has a degree in History from UC San Diego. Post-degree, she has extensively studied Classical Languages and Literature, Classical Latin since 2012, and Attic Greek since 2014. She has taught Latin and Greek since 2018. Lauren has additional experience in Old English, Medieval Latin, Homeric Greek and Old Norse, as well as some knowledge of historical linguistics.
Lauren lives in Norway with her family, her husband, son, daughter, and cat. She speaks Norwegian fluently and volunteers with the Red Cross as a Norwegian coach and group leader for their spoken Norwegian training, offered free of charge for immigrants and refugees. She finds that it is often a benefit to have learned Norwegian as an adult, and it is very meaningful to get to help people from all over the world learn to express themselves in a new language.
Lauren's interests are very much focused on language acquisition and grammar. She works continually to improve her skills and knowledge base by chasing new threads, tying up old ones, and going down new avenues that can lead to greater insight. She is also very interested in how people learn and in ensuring that there are good learning resources. In addition to the resources she has created in the course of her years of teaching Latin/Greek, Lauren also been writing a book to make Ovid’s Metamorphoses more accessible to students. She believes that real knowledge shouldn’t be covered up, hidden until ‘prerequisites’ are met, or dumbed down. Additionally she believes that learning should be meaningful to the learner and, most importantly, it should be fun!
