Module 2
Module 2 of Old High German:
Texts for Readers of Old English
• Sequential Series
Mixed Lecture/Discussion
Medium intensity
The second month of Old High German study builds on the foundation laid by the first month. Although reading speed varies from cohort to cohort, participants in this month will have probably finished a large amount of the older alliterative poetry and one of the shorter poems in rhyming couplets. This month will continue to later texts like the Georgslied and excerpts of Otfrid von Weissenburg’s Evangelienbuch. All texts will be accompanied by short introductory lectures, and the reading style will continue to follow the slow, “close reading” method, supplemented with discussion on dialect features and historical linguistics.
Prerequisites: Participants should have taken Old High German Texts for Old English Readers 1. Prospective newcomers with familiarity in another Germanic Language (Old English, Old Norse, Middle High German or Gothic) are also welcome to attend, but they should be aware that they may be joining us halfway through a text.
Note: All sessions will be live recorded and shared with all enrolled students afterward for review and to allow those who cannot attend live to still participate in the class.

Required Texts
The instructor (Dr. Isaac Smith Schendel) will choose the material for every iteration after conferring with students about their interests, but a standard introductory textbook, like Braune’s Althochdeutsches Lesebuch (ISBN: 978-3484107076; any edition is fine), will be the standard go-to for groups of beginners.
